Space Couture's Winning Designs Touch Down at New York's Couture Fashion Week
In an exciting departure from the typical luxury fashion shows during its semi-annual New York event, one of the runway shows to be presented during Couture Fashion Week this season will be Space Couture, a sampling of the highly creative winning designs of a series of competitions. This inventive fashion show will be held on Sunday, February 15, 2009 at the world-famous Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City.
The concept behind Space Couture began several years ago as a collaboration between Rocketplane Global, an innovative Oklahoma-based company developing sub-orbital space flight programs and options for the public, and the Space Couture Design Contest (SCDC) organization in Japan led by fashion designers Eri Matsui and Misuzu Onuki. Rocktplane Global was looking to offer edgy fashion choices to their future passengers and the SCDC had the vision of encouraging up-and-coming fashion designers to create extraordinary clothing through a competition that would bring out their most daring
fashion skills. The first competition in Tokyo was organized with support of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) Open Lab and featured nearly 1,000 amateur and professional spacewear entries. A subsequent competition in 2008 was held by the prestigious Iwasaki Gakuen Fashion College in Yokohama and was featured at the Japan Aerospace Exposition. A recent gala evening of space fashion and related entertainment was held at the NASA Ames facility in California during Yuri’s Night on April 12, 2008 and attracted an enthusiastic audience of over 8,000. These space fashion events have been covered by the press worldwide including TV Tokyo, TV Asahi, FUJI TV, NTD-TV, TBS, NHK-TV, The Yomiuri Shimbun, The Asahi Shimbun, The Hokkaido Shimbun, Reuters, USA Today, Launch Magazine, Air & Space Smithsonian, Space News, Popular Science and Space.com / Imaginova.
During 2009, another space fashion design competition will begin here in the USA and will kick off with a gala evening of fashion and entertainment during New York Fashion Week in September 2009. This will be a joint project of SpaceFashion.org and Rocketplane Global. The winner of this new USA Space Fashion Design Contest will receive as the Grand Prize a suborbital space flight with Rocketplane Global, along with a contract to design custom spacewear apparel for the RocketPlane catalog and a final live judging and fashion show during New York Fashion Week in February 2010.
Couture Fashion Week is a multi-day event showcasing couture and luxury fashion. It also includes exhibits of luxury brands and fine art as well as world-class entertainment and receptions. The event is held in top venues in New York City, Palm Beach, Florida and other selected cities and is attended by upscale consumers, invited VIPs, the press and high-end store buyers.
