Irene Munger's Blackpool Label to Make U.S. Debut During New York Fashion Week
The morbid beauty of an industrial city in England called Blackpool, has become the theme as well as the label name of Swiss fashion designer Irene Munger. Fusing the melancholy, run-down harshness and tender, childlike fantasy of the amusement parks of Blackpool, Irene Munger's creations approximate art in a theatrical and cheerful way despite their underlying shadow.

Blackpool by Irene Munger will be part of the runway fashion show to be held on Sunday, February 6, 2005 as part of USA INTERNATIONAL FASHION SHOWS' popular "Champagne Fashion Brunch" series. The event will be held at Jimmy Sung's, 219 East 44th Street, (between 2nd & 3rd Avenues), New York City. Irene Munger's designs are meant for the everyday “stage” of the modern woman. The key to the collection is its consistent sensuality as it explores the interplay between appearance and essence with a sharp eye for wit and humor. For her Fall/Winter Collection 2005/2006 entitled simply "twilight", Irene Munger was inspired by the special qualities of light, such as the shimmering luminosity of the sky just before a thunderstorm or the magical moment between dusk and dark, when night begins to cover day, giving everything a new form and color. The paintings of William Turner, the English master of capturing such dramatic effects on canvas, also played an important role in setting the mood for this collection. Turner’s extraordinary paintings of turbulent storms, ghostlike fog and swelling seas as well as his atmospheric landscapes, where shapes and boundaries are transformed into modalities of pure light, influenced the designer's color palette as well as her choice and modeling of materials. |
Colors and Silhouettes. The different shades and saturations of darkening blue of the sky in at and just after sunset provide the basis for the color palette used in this collection. Highlight accents feature tones of faded roses, gold and rust. The narrow is set off by wide, feminine hips. This exaggeration in proportion along with additional decorative elements, transforms the classical cut into a modern provocation.

Materials
and Design. Canvas, brocade, and silk are used in this collection, as
well as delicate leather, recalling precious antique dresses and gowns
slumbering away in attic trunks in old houses. Though they look and feel
delicate and fragile, they have both sturdiness and resiliency to survive
for generations. Each garment is carefully made by hand in a sewing studio
in Switzerland "We are delighted to host the U.S. debut of Irene Munger's designs at this exciting fashion event", notes producer Andres Aquino. "Her distinctive style and creative inspiration are sure to find a receptive and enthusiastic audience in the United States as they have in Europe." The popular Champagne Fashion Brunch show series, launched by USA International Fashion Shows producer Andres Aquino in 2003, continues to expand as a form of entertainment and a showcase for creative couture fashion designers from around the world. It is held on selected Sundays in New York City. |
