Bulgarian Designer Galina Dacheva to Showcase Hand Knitted Couture in U.S. Debut

Acclaimed Bulgarian designer Galina Dacheva will present her latest collection this Fall in New York City. Part of Couture Fashion Week® produced by USA International Fashion Shows®, the runway presentation will be held at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, September 9, 2005 at West Side Loft, 336 West 37th Street (between 8th and 9th Avenues). An after party will follow serving fine wines and champagned from the famed Magura caves of Bulgaria.

The ‘Timeless Fashion’ collection by Galina Dacheva was born from her desire to show the world the unlimited possibilities in hand knitting and to disprove the all too common notion that hand knitting is nothing but a tradition. To this end, a very wide variety of designs are included in the collection: heavy, woolen sweater coats with unique hand knitted boots; classic sweaters and cardigans, but with a modern outlook; attractive and unexpected approaches to suits and outfits; even elegant and extravagant evening dresses. Matching accessories complement the designs and enhance the beauty of the patterns.

The ‘Timeless Fashion’ collection presents a rich color palette, some combinations as contrasting as night and day, others as soft as the flowing greens and browns of nature. The wide variety of yarns, ranging from the classics - merino and lambs wool, through the softness and warmth of mohair and alpaca, to delicate silk and the ‘fiber of kings’ – cashmere, puts the accent on the one basic characteristic all hand knitted items share: individuality.

Some of the designs in the collection take over 300 hours to make. But each one is created with the philosophy that a piece of clothing should be not only beautiful, but comfortable to wear as well. This is true not only for the ‘Timeless fashion’ collection but for all items carrying the label ‘Babini kuki’.

Born in Bulgaria, Galina Dacheva spent most of her life in the town of Russe – an aristocratic town which Bulgarians like to call Little Vienna. She owes her hand knitting skills to her mother and grandmother. Back in the time of socialist Bulgaria, hand knitting remained only a hobby for her, while her professional career developed in a completely different direction – accounting. She was promoted to Head Accountant soon after she started work and later established her own accounting firm. About 5 years ago, she started to teach her daughter Desimira the basics of hand knitting. Desimira gave Galina the idea to turn her hobby into a business. And so, for four years now, creations carrying the Babini kuki label (which translated into English means ‘Granny’s knitting needles’) have been winning the hearts of many admirers worldwide.

Some of the patterns and shapes in the collection were created by Galina Dacheva herself and are unique to the Babini kuki collection. Another one of her achievements, again unique to the Babini kuki label, is making the same design available in 5 different yarns.

Fashion insight and profound knowledge of hand knitting traditions are the canvas on which Galina Dacheva creates her timeless fashion. According to the designer, "Hand knits are pieces of art. Once created, any masterpiece can be copied."

Galina Dacheva's designs are currently available at selected fine retailers in Bulgaria, The Netherlands, Sweden and Canada as well as in Arizona, Indiana and New York in the United States.
