International Artists Provide Perfect Complement to Luxury Fashion Shows at
Couture Fashion Week New York

Couture Fashion Week’s Spring 2009 season featured an array of parties, art exhibits and an award presentation along with its signature high-fashion runway shows. The event, held in the elegant Majestic Ballroom of the Westin Times Square in the heart of the Big Apple, was well attended by diplomats, fashionistas, socialites and international press. In keeping with Couture Fashion Week’s tradition of presenting an international roster of distinguished participants, designers at this season’s event hail from Colombia, Russia, Turkey, Egypt, Albania, India, Australia, Romania and the USA.

This season, the displays by a number of talented artists served to add visual punch to the exhibit area at the event, which guests browsed as they enjoyed cocktail receptions between the fashion shows.

Fashion, fine art and luxury came together in a perfect combination at this popular event. “Many of the same people who have a great interest in fashion, also own beautiful homes, travel, attend fine performances and collect art and antiques,” says Andres Aquino, producer of Couture Fashion Week. The producer, who also presents his own line of upscale evening wear at the event, expects Couture Fashion Week to reach new heights next season scheduled for February 13-15, 2009 at the world-famous Waldorf Astoria in New York City. Additional luxury fashion events are being planned for early 2009 in Las Vegas, Palm Beach and the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean.

More about the artists exhibiting at September 2008’s Couture Fashion Week:

Russian-born artist Leon Oks is an award-winning painter whose work shows an exciting visual style that unites form, fluid brushstrokes, and vivid color into a tapestry of unique inspiration. He combines dynamic movement and multiple perspectives with romanticism and emotion, revealing joy and sadness in equal measures. His work reflects how the artist has tapped into the range of human experience. In 2008 Mr. Oks was selected as a Charter Member of the Leading Intellectuals of the World Expertise nominated by the ABI Governing Board.

Brazilian artist Artur Moreira impressed Couture Fashion Week attendees with his one-of-a-kind woodwork creations that are a distinctive juxtaposition of art, function and form.  Inspired by Salvador Dali, Mr. Moreira seeks out unique coloration and grain patterns in the wood he uses in his pieces. His lacquer-polished wine racks, cabinetry and a myriad of other wooden creations present a distinctive way for collectors to integrate art into their homes. In addition to his studio in Newark, New Jersey, Mr. Moreira plans to open studios in both Brazil and London to provide more direct international exposure. “When I was living in London, I became charmed by the English architecture and other forms of European woodworking,” says Artur Moreira. “All of the wood finishing really caught my attention, and because I always had the ability, I started to dream about the art of working with wood.”

Painter Monica Aguedo of Colombia showcased a selection of colorful pop art inspired by the excess of media consumption of which fashion is a part. She identifies herself as an observer of modern society. She has shown her art previously in Colombia, Germany and England.

Danish ceramist and product designer Susanne Hangaard takes a conceptual approach, often using unexpected combinations of materials with ceramics to achieve intriguing new expressions. The essence of her work is a desire to tell stories and create images in a playful interchange with the world within the framework of clashing environments and realities.

New Jersey-based contemporary artist Lilo Kinne presented some of her expressionistic paintings that she refers to as “multidimensional art”. Her artistic expression includes the integration of different media, and encompasses audios, video films, multi-media installations, paintings, photographs, handwritten texts, sculptures, and works on paper. At Couture Fashion Week Mr. Kinne exhibited some large canvases, typical of her multidimensional creations. Her work has been seen throughout the world.

Other artistic creations with utilitarian value shown at Couture Fashion Week included a luxury limited edition cellular phone by Mobiado. “Mobiado knows the importance of style, color, and material,” say Peter Bonac of Mobiado. Mobiado names are trademarks of Bonac Innovation Corporation.

D. Rothbury of Alberta, Canada introduced her line of distinctive and inspirational handbags and accessories that were a hit among event attendees, and some of the creations were paraded on the catwalk.  Ms. Rothbury’s has translated her passion for art into wearable fashion. The “Urban” collection features the signature handbag entitled “Paint the Town Red”. The inimitable skylines of New York, London and Paris and the excitement of an evening out in the city provided the inspiration reflected in the designs. The “Mediterranean” collection was inspired by the Tuscany and Provence and the vibrancy of scattered poppies and a kaleidoscope of colors are woven into each design.
